Ammes Beach

Beaches in Kefalonia

Philippa G

We are thinking of going to the Olive Grove Apartments in Svoronata the first  week in October, we have a 2 year old and are not planning to hire a car. We're a bit worried that we will find all the tavernas shut down and nowhere to eat, we don't mind limited choice, we just don't want to have to go to Lassi - can anyone give me some assurances that at least a few things will be open and this is a good time of year to go with a toddler?

Thanks

We stayed in Kaligata and walked down to the local beach, Avithos. Which we loved! Soft sand, very clean and not overcrowded!

Went to Svoranata in August 2006.  Al Hekis beach was easily the best in Svoranata. There is a small beach bar but it was not intrusive - just placed in the far corner .  Ammes beach was nice - it was fun to watch the planes landing, but it seemed to get windy mid afternoon. Avithos beach was okay.  Apparently a storm in 2005 spoiled the beach, which is now very narrow and stony and hurts your feet until you get about 8 feet into the sea.

We spent a morning on Ai Helis beach and i found it one of the nicest ive ever been to. The sea is clear and seaweed free  YAY! and sunbeds are well spaced out along the beach. I regret not spending longer there but we had to go back as i had a touch of sunstroke  The only bad thing about Ai Helis was the steps. 84 down also means 84 back up so i suggest buying all things you need for the day (lilos etc.) before hand. overall a lovely beach with well priced sunbeds p.s dont expect the sand to be golden

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Voola and family from the Marketos Studios in Svoronata - we have had some excellent holidays there and want to go back but they are not in the LIBRA 2006 Brochure and I cannot get through on the phone number on their card....help!

  • We stayed at Olive Grove appartments,3rd week in sept. They were clean and modern but no kettle or toaster.Cleaners were very thorough and emptied "bog roll bin" every day.Recommend Bacon Butty from the pool bar.Costos and the girls were friendly as too were the resident cats.
  • Helis Beach was a pleasant 30min walk through loverly countryside, gave us a chance to check out the tavernas. The steps down to beach weren't as bad as they looked, but a few bolders in the sea meant you had to keep a look out,but clear water made this easy.
  • Avithos Beach, another 30min walk, was lined with bolders, but once you got 6-8ft into the clear water, there were sandy patches between them.
  • Altough we enjoyed the peace,we  missed the entertainment in the evenings,as there wasn't any!Hire a car,to explore beautiful island and get into town! Buses unreliable.

.Al Helis beach is great this year. Clean sand, clear water, umbrellas and volleyball. There is no bar which makes the beach quieter. Nearest reataurant, just up the road, is Restaurant Fois: always worth a visit.

Have been to Svoronata a couple of times and was really impressed with Avithos Beach last year but due to bad storms over the winter half of the beach has disappeared.  The beach bar is back and sun loungers were free in June probably 5 Euros a go now! Not overly impressed with the two tavernas there ie food and particulary the service in what was Ormerta was diabolical, I counted 12 tables that had not been cleared when we arrived and when we had our meal the plates were stcking up on the table after each course!

Ammes Beach, Minnies and Hellis beaches are ok but not too much to write home about.

Try Long Beach in Lassi if you want a bit more excitement as there are watersports and a big beach bar, only problem is that it gets crowed at about 4-5pm

WE HAVE FOUND AVITHOS RESORT ON THE INTERNET
WWW.HIT360.COM/AVITHOSBEACH/EN AND WILL ALSO BE THERE
2ND OCTOBER

We just got back from staying at Avithos resort, it was lovely, scenic location, close to uncrowded little beach. The resort itself was very clean and modern and everything was excellent, friendly staff and nice pool etc. Apartments have their own little terrace/balcony for evening drinks etc.
But take enough cash/travellers cheques to last as no ATM nearby. Lots of good tavernas in walking distance too. Highly recommnded, enjoy it!

We were in Svoronota for two weeks in the summer - loved it so much we are going back on 1 October. Staying at Avithos Resort Apartments - this time. Does anyone have information on what these apartments are like and there exact location as I booked over the internet with no pictures!! Any comments, views much appreciated

We stayed at Avithos Hotel and Apatrments and it was FANTASTIC. Ness, Manoles and Nikos made our week - sorry for keeping you up till 5am most nights!!
The beach was beautiful and the whole place had a fantastic atmosphere. We miss it terribly and can't wait to go back next year.
If you stayed in the last 2 weeks of August THANKS GUYS we had a blast.

Svoronata is a very small, typically Greek village. It is beautiful and we really enjoyed it. I would definately recommend this resort to couples who want a quiet relaxing holiday away from busy 'brits abroad' resorts. We stayed for a week at the George / Stefanos apartments which had only eight rooms with just other couples in, British and Greek. We had a wonderful stay here with Stefanos and his brother making us feel really welcome. They had a lovely pool area over looking the sea surrounded by fig, orange and lemon trees! Although a good walk to the nearest restaurant, we found this did not put us off as the village is so beautiful. Although i would definately recommend hiring a car (Greekstones were the best!) if you just fancy a relaxing time at the beach or around the pool with no noise, then svoronata is the place to go!!

We stayed at the Avithos resort hotel, lovely hotel, very restful. The walk to the beach at avithos was about 15 minutes, with two hills. It was a pleasant stroll, but not if you have difficulty walking. Also the walk home was in the dark, so a torch is recommend. Both the restaurants on the beach did pleasant meals, and not a slimey owner is sight!....the beach was lovely, I would recommend it if you like beaches. Overall a pleasant and quiet area. Great for a restful holiday, if you like clubbing...don't chose this area. You'd be very disappointed.

The beaches in Svoronata were very good, we stayed at the Blue Horizon hotel and so Ammes was the closest, being only 10 mins walk away. There's good facilities there with sun-beds and umbrellas on hire for 8 euros, there's also a snack bar which is very good and reasonably priced food. The sand is lovely and the sea is very clear (the best for snorkelling especially over by the rocks on the left hand side) the beach is very close to the airport and so the planes come in very close about 4 or 5 times a day, it's an experience especially if you're in the sea as they come right over your head. We went to Elis beach which was a bit of a disappointment, there are no sunbeds or umbrellas to hire which you really do need as it does get really hot, there's also quite a few steps down to the beach, on the plus side there was only another 2 people there, so we felt like we had the beach to ourselves, even though we did fry!!. Avithos beach is lovely but you need a car to get there it took us 10-15 munites in the car from where we staying, so I'm guessing it would take you atleast an hour if you wanted to walk (not a good idea in the baking heat) You can hire sunbeds and umbrellas here and there's a snack bar on the beach, and restaurant near where you park. Overall I thought if you were staying in the main part of Svoronata that Ammes was the best. Although none of the beaches have posing potential except Avithos as this is the busiest, but then again who really cares about posing potential anyway!!

Good time to be had at the Omerta resteraunt, enjoyed our times there so much. Excellent food, drinks service & company a must to visit, pleased with the bill as well.

hi,
i am going to svoronata at the end of june.small hotel s.c.and was worried about how many tavernas are there as it is a small village.also, how is the fishing there.grateful if any one can help.

Kerry

we went to svoronata twice, we found it very clean and safe for kids! i have now realised that there r 3 parts of this beach, all i know is we stayed near the steps! the coctail bar is brill, the owner is fab.

AMMES BEACH: it is fab because there are lots of fish to see when you are snorkeling, the aeroplanes are a little low but other wise fab.

AL HELIS: it is a long walk down the steps and the sand is dark. also a fish like the size of a baby shark.

AVITHOS BEACH: the best!!!

Ammes Beach

The beach was clean and the sunbeds were reasonably priced and comfortable.

There is only a small slope from the road that is concreted to the beach and this was fine.

There is plenty of car parking nearby.

The planes are very low as the start of the runway is 20 M from the end of the beach. They were very noisy but you only heard them when they were very close and there weren't too many flights per day.

The beach sloped gently in to the sea and there was a long shelf of sand that was shallow enough to be safe for the children.

Al Helis beach

This was a little more off the beaten track but was still busy.
There are two small carparks nearby and the walk to the beach was easy enough.
There are over 60 steps down that are clean and well spaced. The beach was clean and had a good bar with lots of shade, although it could be expensive.

The beach was part of a large cove which is very picturesque.

The planes were too far away to be noisy.

There seem to be two resident dogs that wandered around all day looking for shade and titbits of food.

Svoronata has three beaches. All of which are very safe for children and swimming. They are all sandy so not at all painful (except when they are very hot in the midday sun). You can walk out for miles because the sand slopes down very gradually. On all the beaches, an umbrella and two sunbeds costs about 8euros.
Ammes beach is nice and you can walk especially far into the sea here. But the planes fly in over your head which may bother some people, although we didn't mind as it is interesting and there are very few a day.
Avithos is a fantastic beach, similar to Ammes but without the planes.
Al Helis is nice but the sand is darker so not quite as pretty as the others. Beware of the 80 steps down.
All the beaches are superb!

Ammes beach : Unlike a lot of beaches on Kefalonia this has super soft sand beach. With crystal clear water - gently shelving so ideal for kids. Right at the end of the airport so some aircraft noise. Quite spectacular to see the planes swooping in overhead

One small beach bar - lots of sunbeds on the southern section & can get a bit crowded but more space if you walk towards the northern end

Avitos Beach: Another great beach - just like Ammes but without the aircraft!

Superb, We loved it!!!!!!!!!
