Best Time to Visit

Steve T

My wife and I paid our first visit to Kefalonia this year, using Easyjet from Gatwick sat 11th to 18th Oct. We stayed in a fantastic apartment in Agia Efimia overlooking the beautiful harbour. The weather was a contsistant 24c each day with blue cloudless skies all but the last day when it was a bit cloudy with haze but still hot. Evenings in Agia, all but one of the harbour side cafes and restaurants were open, one other close in the week. The 2 main supermarkets of the 3 open each day as was the bakers/patisserie and the 2 gist shops. The Post Office opens weekdays 12 to 2 and the meat market was open daily (butchers). It was so nice we swam in the sea almost daily from Agia Efimia, Myrtos beach and Antisamos beach. We were able to walk up to Assos Fotress as it was warm but not too hot. Eating out on the pavement each evening no problem in tea shirt and skirts. The roads were pleasantly empty and very easy to drive our hire car from Cars4you from the airport, all over the island. No traffic, no hassle. Nighttime was about 16c but didn't need the aircon on in our apartment. Now the only slight downside - we did get a few mozzie bites sitting around the harbour eating in the evening but as long as you take a spray and have a cheap plugin available for 4 Euros in the supermarkets for the apartment everything was great. Best part of the week, watching two Loggerhead turtles swimming alongside our cafe at lunchtime on Argostoli harbour. Amazing and we won't hesitate to go again in early Oct. I imagine the other side of the island where a lot of the hotels are based is different in Oct as their season has finished but as a couple not having to entertain children or wanting anything but good local inexpensive food and a quiet week, it was ideal.

October is not the time to go!  We went in half term and had the worst holiday of our lives - and 6 months later it still leaves a bad taste.

Everything was closed- trips were not running, shops were closed - even trying to buy some fruit and vegetables was impossible.  There was not a bus running or a taxi to be had.  We tried to go to the winery - closed, the castle - closed, whole villages were closed.  There were only 4 restaurants open in Skala (where we stayed) and most (apart from the Old Village) were staffed by people who clearly wanted to be elsewhere.

If you want a holiday where there is nothing to do and nowhere to go then October in Kefalonia may be for you.  If you think a holiday should be about more than just a beach go elsewhere!!!!

just returned from skala we stayed first week in october

the up side......... not many people so could choose any reataurant and bar and not have to queue
plus the roads are empty all you see are the hire cars.............
also beaches very empty

the down side..........loads of wasps and mosquitos
plus most trips are empty so will not run them if they cannot get the people
wanted to go on the doughnuts on the beach but they would not take us as no one else to go on it...........
also everything was closing down that week.....so perhaps the last few weeks in september would be better

Fantastic weather. Stayed in Kefalonia during the last week in September and first week in October. One word of warning; the wasps and mosquitos are very active at this time of year so be prepared!

Brilliant! We were lucky with the weather - although there was a ferocious storm one night, when the sun came out it was gorgeous. The island was quiet with very few tourists, and that made it more relaxing. Would recommend it as a place to relax off season. Many good restaurants and such freindly people. My family all loved it.

stayed in lassi 14th oct for a week. weather during the day ok when the sun was out but we did not have a lot of good days... i was not prep for how cold the nights would be. as most bars ect are set up for eating out side it was hard to get warm and stay warm while out...we did speak to people who had been before in oct and they said it was alot colder that normal. found alot of bars and restuarnts had alredy closed but could easily drive to argostoli for a bigger selection.  if you do visit in oct pack an extra jumper to be on the safe side

I have visited Skala in Kefalonia 5 times now and been twice in October, the weather is still fantastic in October, everything is still open as the season doe not end and the last flights do not depart until 31st October! It is a lot quieter in October which is nice it means the beaches are empty!!

Check out Flamingo's the best restaurant on Kef!

We stayed at the wonderful Hotel San Georgio.  What a find!  We wanted a last minute deal for a quick week away to end the year.  On the plane we sat next to two great people from Oxford (sorry for forgetting your names), who were returning for the 5th, yes 5th time!  We viewed some great thunderstorms in the evening, from the terrace of the restaurant, spectacular if not a little chilly.  Our days were warm and clear, some started off cloudy, but the sun soon burnt that off.  Will definately return, and in October! no over crowded beaches, roads or attractions.  A perfect time to vist Kefalonia.  Go on, you know you want to.

We stayed at Doumas Studios in Katelios for a week on Oct 5th 2004.

The weather was absolutely glorious. We went on a few tours and ate at several tavernas in Katelios which were very good.

We were very glad that we went early in October though as when we were leaving a lot of the tavernas, shops etc were getting ready to close up for the season.

We stayed in Svoronata between 7th and 21st October and it was awful. The weather was okay although we had a couple of storms and flooding. We stayed in the Sunrise Village Apartments and all the surrounding Restaurants/Supermarkets closed after a few days of us being there. The nearest Restaurant was a 40mnt walk away. We were having to pay 20 euros a day to get Taxi's to the nearest town Lassi or the capital Argostoli. I wouldn't recommend October at all unless you are able and willing to hire a car. None of us could drive and we had explained this to our Travel Agent and our First Choice Rep. The only good thing about October would be that it is still hot and everything is very quiet so there is no fighting for sunbeds or room on the beach.

Perfect time to visit, quiet and hot !

Alastair M

We went the last few days of September and the first few in October, and I think it was an ideal time to go, we had a bit of rain, but only for a couple of hours on 2 days, it didn't spoil the holiday though, cos it was very hot soon as the storms passed.
The resort was reasonably quiet, but not deserted. We nver had to wait for a table at any of the restaurants or bars, but it was busy enough not to be the only people in the restaurant!!!
If we decided to go back, I would definately go about the same time.

october is just right. it isnt 2 hot and isnt 2 cold. we went in july and it was very very hot so anybody that goes there in july be warned and dont 4get your sun tan lotion! october is lovely though, abit quite but we still had a great time!! see you in august 2003!!!

Kerry

(20th-27th) the weather was just right, when we visited in july it was very very hot this time you were able to sunbath without havin to jump in the pool every 5 minutes, i no that a resturant called Oskars is open untill the end of October (u really must go there it is the best) but the streets are very quiet and many places are closed, local supermarkets are open, u will b very lucky to get a taxi but trust me, u will get one. kefalonia, c u in august!!!

Sarah B

Im a very cold person, and October was still hot enough for me during the day, absolutely freezing at night. The weather was okay during the day 2 sunny days, the rest overcast and some rain. Absolutley poured some nights with the most excellent thunder storms, only woke us once though! Rain very wet! Got soaked to the skin in one minute! You need to hire a car in October as its not really weather for sitting on a beach all day. Still the last day was nice (at the airport where we were delayed 7 hours!!!).

Helen S

Just got back today! Stayed in the resort of Lassi, but due to it being the end of season it was very quiet and 75% of restaurants/bars were closed. The weather was lovely, we were there for 7 days and only had one cloudy day, all the rest were beautiful and sunny.

Samantha

October was ok. We had about 3 days of really nice sunshine. We visited from 6-13 Oct. A lot of the nights it was raingin and thunder storms, so bring some warm clothes and waterproofs and you'll be fine.

Jeff B

Going on 27th October for 5 days I'll let you know !!

Kate F

We visited 5th to 12th October. We had one rainy day, and a another rainy evening. Most of the time was beautifully sunny, with perfect temperatures for wandering about the island. Not too hot to do anything, but hot enough for t-shirts, shorts and sandals. Also found that most places (except Fiscardo) were nice and quiet including the beaches, and we didn't have to queue for anything - although we did narrowly miss being swamped by 3 coachloads at Drogarati and Melissani. Everywhere seemed to still be open except for the Roman Villa at Skala. A good time to visit.

Sarah T

We visited for just 5 days between 5th & 10th October (last week of season, I think). The weather was still gorgeous (compared to UK!) and the sites were not at all crowded so no queuing required. Only one day of rain but life doesnt stop - just stick to indoor activities, like the tavernas! Very quiet and relaxed - I even managed to get sunburnt!!

Tamsin O

WE ARRIVED ON THE 29th OF SEPT TILL THE 6th OF OCTOBER. WE CHOSE THIS TIME AS WE HAVE AN 11MTH OLD BABY. SHE HAD A BALL OF A TIME!! IT WAS ABOUT 27 oc EVERY DAY WITH LITTLE RAIN. I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE STAYING TO HIRE A CAR THOUGH AS IT IS A MUST. IT COST US €125 FOR 3 DAYS WITH ONE EXTRA DAY FREE. THE BABY FELL AND HIT HER HEAD ON THE MARBLE FLOOR IN THE APARTMENT, EVERYONE WAS VERY HELPFUL AS WE NEEDED TO GET HER CHECKED OUT BUT THE DOCTOR DID COST €65. THE SHOPS SELL MOST BABY PRODUCTS NAPPYS, WIPES, FOOD, SHAMPOO, SOAP etc THEY DO COST A BIT MORE THAN AT HOME.

Phillip E

We were in Lassi from the 1st to the 8th October and found it very agreeable. We only had one afternoon where the rain spoilt the day. Temperatures averaged around 20 deg. with sun on most days. You do take a chance at this time of year so we were lucky. Crowds were minimal so seeng the sites was easy, but most of the water sports (jet skis, bananas etc) have closed.

Marianne G

We arrived the last 2 days in September. Weather wise, it was slightly cooler on a couple of days, and maybe earlier in the year would have been better for that, but we were told that the weather has been quite bad this year anyway1 It was a lot quieter than obviously peak time, but that was what we wanted, and it wasn't dead anyway.
