My husband, my parents and i have just come back from kefalonia on 28th june 2003. We loved the Eva apartments. Costas and Eva, the owners were lovely although they didn't speak much english they tried their best. The apartments were very basic, as are most greek apartments, but there was everything we needed. The beach is 5 minutes stroll away and the supermarket and 3 tavernas are the same distance. There wasn't a pool but you can use the one at the barbara apts at the end of the road or any other that you find.
We did a north of the island tour and a south of the island tour.
On the south trip (Captain Corelli's trip)we travelled to
st. gerassimos monastery, then onto Sami. We then went to Poros. Next we stopped in Skala for lunch and finally to the Divino winery.
On the north trip(Natural Kefalonia)we stopped at Myrtos beach(for photos only) then to Assos, up to Fiskardo then to Melissani lake and finally to the drogorati cave.
The minibus and coach we went on were both air conditioned. Our driver on both trips was Demetrios who was very experienced and managed to get the bus through spaces that even a bike couldn't fit through (or so it seemed).
Our guide was a lovely lady named Pam, who gave us all the info you needed to know about the island and made it sound so interesting.
We went to the lake as part of the Natural Kefalonia island tour. We only paid 4.50 euros to get in but even that seemed a lot for how long we were there. The singing boatmen were quite amusing, but couldn't understand him when he was explaining the history of the caves. Our guide told us that there is a website for more info about the lake on the kefalonia university of geology site. It might be worth a look before you go and visit so you are not disappointed.
My husband thought it was magnificent but i was disappointed. The 100+ steps are very steep and slippy but it is better than air conditioning once u r down there. The stage in there is fantastic, formed by the stalagmites and stalagtites. We went as part of a coach party but only a handful of us went down to the caves. At 3.50 euros it was good on price but it is a very short trip. Our guide told us that they had Maria Calas (the opera singer) do a concert in there, but because of the power of her voice and the breathtaking acoustics she broke some of the mites and tites, so they haven't had an opera singer since.
My family and i, ate here most nights. Costas and Panyoti were a great laugh. The portions were enormous and the variety was excellent. The karaoke nights were good fun and Jane the lovely barmaid is brilliant. Me and my husband stu are gonna go and stay in one of their apartments soon. We kept Costas and Jane up while 4am some mornings just talking and having a laugh. We had our 1st anniversary and my 22nd birthday there and i will never forget it. On our last night we stayed at the bar until 6am and we had to be out of our rooms for 9am. So Jane, i know u will probably read this, so thanks again for making our holiday a good 'un and for all the porto helis stuart style cocktails and tell costas we love him and see you again shortly.
