Seems we chose the best time to go (as luck would have it)! Beautiful weather and no crowds - even on Makris Yialos beach. Perhaps the fact that it was during the first two weeks of the World Cup helped, but everyone we met suggested June was about the best time to visit.
Lovely little town. Breathtaking views on the way in. A great place to have lunch and relax. Kids enjoyed the little peeble beach too, with its shallow water in the harbour. We spent a very enjoyable day there.
We stayed in the Kef Palace last June (2002) and thoroughly enjoyed ourseleves. The food was excellent with lots of choice, the rooms were clean and comfortable (even if a bit simple by some standards), and the staff first class. The pool is big (although a little deep for our 8 year old - luckily there is a kids mini pool alongside) and great to cool off in and the canapies over the sunbeds are lovely for hiding under when the sun gets too hot (which it does!). Only slight disappointment was the evening entertainment, which was a bit disappointing for the kids (although the Greek dancing display is great fun - especially if you join in!), but otherwise it is a superb place to stay. Xi beach is also excellent for kids, while the sound of the bells of the herding goats each evening was wonderful.
Because of its location, car hire is a must - and not finding the time to take a look around at least some of the rest of this beautiful island would be a crime anyway. The scenery is simply stunning!
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at the Kefalonia Palace, so much so we are returning in July this year.
What's more, the island of Kefalonia is breathtaking and the people extremely friendly. Once you visit Kefalonia once, you will keep coming back.
